WEEKEND SNAPSHOT #6

Feeling guilty over the hours I have been spending at work, I took Haligilet to the village playground yesterday...
And today, I work again. No QT with Haligi nor Haligilet. Sigh...

SHOOP! SUBARU!

After getting the Town and Country this year, fil and Haligi are setting their sights on a Subaru. The fil and Haligi particularly fancy the new Forester which they first fell in love with at the 2008 Auto show we attended. The same beauty on wheels is being showcased at New Subaru DC, and is being eyed to replace our six-year old pick-up (which, by the way, I love to bits!).

Why the Subaru, you might ask? Well aside from aesthetics, we've heard nothing but good reveiws of this beauty on wheels. A crossover vehicle that combines some of the best attributes of a sport-utility vehicle with the ride and driving dynamics of a car, the Forester has gotten all the males in the family going gaga over it. And they have been dreaming Subaru since. Between you and me, I am hoping that the Subaru will replace Charcoal, our Manila-based van, hehehe! Fact is, I even have a name for it. Do I hear new "DADA'S CAR"?!? Wishful thinking to the max! Hehehe!

Subarumd.com couldn't have done it better--with the comprehensive Subaru facts, tips, and references, coupled with an extensive selection of Subaru cars, wagons and mini vans to view and choose from, our decision-making process will hopefully be a lot easier. And I just hope the decision will be in our favor!

VIVA VIGAN!

My Vigan report will have to be on an installment basis as I am really swamped with work (but maver, why are you still plurking?!?!). Needless to say, my Vigan trip was exhausting YET exciting. Crisologo Street was so charming...And it was a great venue for shopping too--from blankets, rugs, curtains, to magnets, tea light candles, and all the abubuts you can think of.

Under different circumstances, I would definitely love to go back to that northern province boasting of so much history and character (and probably ghosts too, hehehe!) .

See you again Vigan, sans deadlines, sans work, sans Lawin!

DESTRESS

How I wish this long and toxic week will end. But it won't. Not until this Sunday at least.

I've got articles to write, an AVP to finish, another out-of-town trip to work on, a booth layout to polish, and a financial reporting document to decode. Saklolo!!!

Destress muna...

Happy weekend to everyone, except me. Huhuhu.

MEA CULPA

Sorry for being terribly amiss in doing blog updates. This week has been terribly toxic. And if there is a word that means MORE TOXIC than toxic, then that's how my week is turning out to be.

In place of a regular entry, I'm leaving you with some photos of the welcome surprises that I enjoyed in Vigan... More anecdotes (and more photos) next time...

THE LATEST DISH

My fil has long been contemplating a switch in cable providers. He tells us that the current operator made unjustified adjustments in pricing even amidst poor channel selection, inferior broadcast quality and fluctuating signals.

He tells us that he is seriously considering a switch to Dream TV, the Philippines' first direct tv broadcasting service to homes. This service is similar to US-based DirectTV Satellite Television, a provider that offers direct television packages and service via a broadcasting set composed of a directv satellite dish, receiver, and DVR recorders. The service is backed by expert installation and customer service.

Hopefully, fil would get the same installation and customer expertise here in Pinas, should he decide to make the switch.

THE RIGHT STUFF

My shift in career from banking to telecoms was one excrutiating, nonetheless, exciting journey. I now have to contend with extended working hours, eratic schedules, occasional field work, and an everchanging landscape of products and trends--a far cry from my twelve-year stint with a bank.

While I miss the predictability of a desk job and the opportunity to spend more time with the Haligi and the Haligilet, I know that I finally found a job, which, I am proud to say, is my "calling." Ahuh, it took me twelve years to figure it out!

Admittedly though, it is still a work in progress. The tall order is that I have to keep abreast with the latest trends in gadgets and communication. Luckily, there are sites like Stuff.TV, which contains the latest technology reviews and gadget reviews. It has certainly my journey of learning a lot easier.

I hope all of you have found your true calling too.

CURTAIN CALL (REPRISE)

If you recall, a few months ago, I wrote about waking up with the sun kissing my face one bright Saturday morning, all because Haligilet chose to play with our curtains. The result? A broken curtain rod and curtains all over the floor.

Curtains can be very tricky because repair cannot be neglected. It can be pretty frustrating to shop around for nice curtains and curtain rods too. I particularly fancy those showcased in smithandnoble.com, an interesting resource of high quality window coverings to suit your every need. The designs are simple yet very tasteful, something that I'd like to see as window trimmings for our humble abode.

It would certainly make me happy if I get to buy anything even half as nice as any of those window coverings! They would indeed be the perfect accent to our otherwise urban-contemporary interior design. Now if anyone had leads to the likes of these, it will be much appreciated. And who knows, I just might find some at Vigan's Crisologo Street.

Wish me luck!

JUST AROUND THE CORNER

The BER months are just around the corner. Aside from the Yuletide season, I can think of more than a dozen occasions, most especially birthdays, coming up--Haligilet's, nephew A's, neice J's, and Loloa Anda's 88th!

It can be quite a stretch looking for a gift for Lola Anda, and it keeps getting harder every year! We've given her clothes,
Beautifeel shoes, scrapbooks, religious icons, jewelry, bags and accessories. It seems like we've exhausted all possibilities!

Another option we are considering now is to send flowers/flores/flora or whatever you may want to call it. After all, all women swoon over flowers, right? Case in point, I remember my mil getting all pink when she received an international flower delivery when fil was abroad. Who knows, she may just have taken after Lola Anda!

Worth a try, donchathink?

THIS IS IT

Cousin M finally pushed through with her New York trip for her much awaited US Medical Board Exams. We've all been rallying behind her, hoping and praying that our bunsong cousin conquers the world of medicine. I can still remember taking care of M when she was still a toddler, and now here she is, all of 25 years, preparing for her life-changing exam. Time surely flies.

While M dreads the big exam day, she actually looks forward to her reunion with Tito E, eldest bro of my maver and my late Tito G, M's father. M will be staying with Tito E, just a short ride away from the Newark Airport, via
bus charter New York. Tito E will be M's refuge before being Philadelphia-bound, venue of her board exams.

I'm pretty sure, that even if she's traveling alone, the trip will be most convenient for my cousin. The bus charter will undoubtedly provide M with a cheaper, safer and more convenient way to transport her to and from the airport. It'll also keep M's mind worry-free as she prepares for her life-changing exam. I'm sure my late Tito G is smiling down from heaven as M offers this test to him.

Way to go, M. Do us all proud!

DOWN AND OUT, WITH GOUT

Haligi has been nursing episodes of gout since last week, causing him to miss his precious sessions at the boxing gym. (Iba na ang tanders!) You see, both of us enrolled at Elorde's early this year to get rid of those nasty bulges. I've fallen back from the routine but Haligi is still at it.

So much is Haligi's dedication, that now, more than ever, he has been very conscious of his food and calorie intake, as calculated by the Fit Fuel Blog. Ever since Haligi came across Fit Fuel, he could spend hours and hours end, browsing the site for sports nutrition, personal care, or even just plain tips for having fun.

The site has been a great inspiration for Haligi and he is hoping that it will grow on me too. We shall see.

WILL BE GONE; IN VIGAN

I'm all packed for my trip tomorrow. We leave at midnight for a two-day shoot at the interesting Northern province of Vigan.

My friends have been telling me to get a load of antiques and outdoor furniture which line the famous cobblestone streets of Vigan.

Now if the Vigan outdoor wood furniture would look anywhere near those shown at spacify.com, then I would definitely consider purchasing a few pieces. Spacify's furniture, particularly the outdoor benches would definitely be welcome additions to my my in-laws' garden in Batangas. Please excuse Haligilet's demeanor...
Bon voyage to me!

THE YAYA M STORY

I never did tell you about the Yaya M story, did I?

Yaya M has been one efficient helper in our family. With her expertise (naks, expertise!) in newborn care, she just hopped from one relative to another, taking care of all the newborn babies in our family, the last being Haligilet. There was no question in her skill, efficiency and integrity. And while she usually limited her tenure to a maximum of two years per employer, we were fortunate enough to breach this because, she claimed, she wanted to grow old with us. However, things took a different turn when we hired an all-around helper given my very toxic schedule at work. She transformed from one superyaya to one supertamad one.

In a nutshell, it was a disaster just waiting to happen. After all, ours gripes against her (and maybe hers, against us) had accumulated over the years. It all began with petty stuff--extended days off and spells of laziness (especially when Haligilet became a toddler). Then things progressed to deeper offenses--questionable work ethic; intrigue-sowing; mega-over-to-the-max trips to the lotto outlet/MiniStop/Mercury/Watsons/Yadayadayada; and the last straw, talking back when being disciplined.

Yaya M's stint with us ended sadly and regretfully. Sayang. She has long since sent her apologies via text--"Ati M, galet pa p0h ba kay0 sa ken. Sori p0h sa lahat. Mahal k0 p0h kay0. Sana p0h wag nyo p0h sana ak0h sasab0notan pag nakita ny0 aq"--PAANO NAMAN HINDI MAWAWALA GALIT MO DYAN DIBUZZ? LAFF TRIP! But who knows, with the coming of another baby a little over nine months, our paths just might cross again.

HURRAY FOR HALIGILET!!!

Let it be told...

Ano kaya magandang incentive sa pinagmanahan ni Haligilet? Mwahaha!

BACK FROM BATANGAS

Our visit to Batangas was short but sweet. Most interesting of all was the fact that our visit was punctuated by a near-brush with Lawin, the country's latest typhoon.

Do you know that a land trip to Batangas now costs US$35 per one-way trip? That's close to P3,000.00 pero roundtrip. That's sans toll fees and pasalubong costs pa. Himatay!

A bit of research over at RankNoodle.com revealed interesting insights on the the history of fuel pricing--http://www.ranknoodle.com/article/timeline-of-gas-prices. I must say the statistics were indeed telling of rougher times ahead.

The current state of fuel affairs in this country has indeed made a dent on our finances and has, sadly, affected our family relations as well. Our visits to Haligi's hometown have dwindled significantly over the past months. I dread the day that visits will ultimately be nil if the current gas situation fails to improve.

Sad. Sad. Sad.

The trip to the OB was a breeze. She was her usual motherly, jovial self. And again, she was working even with an injury, just as she did about four years ago, when the little angel in our family was born. Ang sipag talaga ni Doktora!

TELENOVELA IN THE MAKING

Another development si brewing in the homefront. OMG. My mil called me this morning and told me the news. How could this have happened? And why? Pang-telenovela and definitely life-changing. Suffice it to say that someone's in need for moving companies. Sigh. Sigh. Sigh. Indeed the only thing permanent is change.

More on this next time. Happy looong weekend!

BREAKING MY SILENCE

A few months after Haligilet and his cousin, A, were born (they were born three months apart), my maver (their grandmaver) made me and my sister promise never to get pregnant again. Why? Because both our pregnancies were problematic--mine, resulting with premature labor; and my sister's ending with an emergency CS because of her decreased level of amniotic fluid.

The doting grandmaver lost sleep over our conditions. Thus, that covenant sealed with us.

Too bad, the promise has been broken. Well, I'm sure she'll get over it. :)

I will be traveling to Laoag, Vigan and Baguio all in a span of 48 hours to complete our corporate AVP--something that hasn't been done in a long time. This will also be my second video project for the year, the first one being the DBP project showcased in the PGMA HK trip during the first quarter of 2008.

At the helm of this project is the Ludritz team, who by the way, did that wacky birthday video for our boss. Ludritz offers services similar to Richter Studios, a
Chicago video production outfit. Like Ludritz, Richter offers production services like video presentations, 2D graphics, 3D animations, text treatments, logo animations, stylized effects, animation and many more. I do hope our finished products measures up to the standards set by Richter Studios!

When God closes the door, He opens a window. Just when the going gets tough, our family is reminded of God's infinite power and wisdom.

LEADS TO JOBS IN LEEDS

During a recent seminar, I was able to interact with employees belonging to departments different from my own. What struck me most was a conversation I had with N, whose family recently moved back to Manila after being temporarily uprooted to live and have jobs in Leeds.

N tells me that her and her husband's jobs were coursed through a recruitment agency she found over the net. What's good about the arrangment is that the agency took care of all fees and charges. N was called upon to fill up a call centre job vacancy, while her husband specialized in engineering.

But after a brief stint, N and her husband that it would be in their best interest to go back to Pinas. And I salute them.

FLUSHED, LITERALLY

Pasintabi na muna po sa mga kumakain...

Last Sunday, after depositing my mil at the derma, I suddenly felt the urge to, uhm, well..."move". Hahaha. And so, with Haligilet in tow, we went to the the restroom of Rustan's, located at the 2nd floor. Poor Haligilet, with no one to watch over him, had to share the restroom stall, and endure the wrath of his maver's stinkbombs.

I stiffled my laughter as his expression shifted from jolly chitchatter to nauseous bystander. And when he couldn't contain himself any longer, he goes...
Haligilet: What's that Mama? Is that your pupu, Mama? Your pupu's bahu Mama!

(giggles outside the stall)

Maver (trying to maintain her composure): No, baby. That's
YOUR pupu. YOUR pupu's bahu.

Haligilet: No, Mama. That's YOUR pupu. YOUR pupu's bahu.

(laughter outside the stall)
EEEEK, DYAHEEE. Hay Lord, please flush my flushed persona down the toilet!!!

Sa mga nasa restroom ng Rustan's nuong mga oras na yun--opo, ako po yun. I will gladly sign autographs on toilet paper. Mwahaha.

Darn, I should've stayed at home.

A PAINFUL GOODBYE

I have been feeling sad for days over a relationship gone awry. Years of togetherness down the drain.

We met and fell in love years ago, and decided to build a home. We raised our little angel together, making memories, marking milestones. We laughed during victories, and cried during defeats. We sailed through the bittersweet journey called life, full of hopes and dreams.

Days turned into weeks. Weeks, into months. And months, into years. The laughter had gone. All that was left was pain. And anger. And anguish.

You promised me you will stay. You promised you will be by my side. But where are you now? Why did it come to this? While we vowed to grow together, we ultimately, grew apart.

Goodbye, Yaya M. Thank you for being a part of our lives. Our chapter is finished.

WHAT TO DO WHEN IT'S COLD OUTSIDE...

Get cold inside too!!!

Dying for a caffeine fix on this dreary day, Haligi braved the rains and took our son to the neighborhood cafe. Naninggit pa si Haligi as he sent me an MMS of what Haligilet had this rainy Wednesday afternoon. Who needs prohormones if you can have a load of this...
That striped tee, by the way, belongs to Yaya M's replacement. Hehehe.

MAILBOX (TEMPORARILY) CLOSED

We sent Haligilet's yaya packing after almost four years of service (a more in depth discussion on this, soon). With no other trusted guardian to pick Haligilet up from school, I was forced to take the afternoon off today.

This development made me miss out on important tasks such as article assignments, some logistical concerns for our AVP shoot next week, and a pending internal email marketing campaign that I had to leave hanging at my mailbox.

At times like these, I wish we had something like the email marketing solution being offered at icontact.com. The website is an interesting resource of communication services, email marketing services, tracking mechanisms, email marketing articles, bounce-handling tips, spam filtering advice, email subscription management pointers, and many, many more--things which would reall come in handy for our current campaign.

Well, there is always a next time. And there's always a next yaya. :)

EKS-OH-EKS-OH

HOLY WOW

Long weekend's coming up. Yipee! Nothing in our homefront, thus far. What's cooking in yours?

Well, aside from regular trips to the mall (I can finally reclaim my space in the mall after being sidelined by a sprained ankle. Wuhoo!), Haligilet has been bugging us to visit his Kuya Z, older brother of Z (remember that "Cheetah" party that we went to? Hehehe!) in Paranaque. You see, our son totally adores his surrogate Kuya and loves playing with him every chance he gets. See for yourself...
I do hope though that we could pry Z's eyes from the computer because his mom (my cousin, A) tells us that Z has been totally obsessed with computer games of late. This comes as no surprise since the big little man has been glued to the PC even before he could walk. His vision is testament to this, registering a high 400, at his tender age of eight.

Anyways, cousin A tells me that Z has been totally into Anime and Warcraft, which to Z's mind, are the greatest gaming inventions in the entire universe, aside from Club Penguin, of course :D So much is Z's obsession with the site that he has been bugging his mom to
buy a WoW account for him. And what is a WoW account? Well, it refers to World of Warcraft accounts, which have been pre-owned and pre-played by retiring World of Warcraft players. The advantage is that the accounts are 100% secure, a major concern of doting mom, cousin A. With Christmas just around the corner, we just might consider giving this as our Yuletide present for Z.

EKS-OH-EKS-OH

THIS TIME IT'S FOR REAL...

Remember a few months back when we said goodbye the first time, here?

Well the time has come to cut the ties. And we are doing so not with a tinge of sadness, but "madness." Iba na ang Abu. Abu Sado. Puno na ang salop!

Sayang. But I'd like to think that it was good while it lasted.

Good luck and goodbye, Yaya M!

CLEANING UP

At the beginning of the year, my friends and I resolved that 2008 will be year of financial and healthful bliss. It'll be a year of clean-ups, as we put it--clean-ups of diets, stockrooms, closets, and credit cards.

In this connection, I took the first step just last month. I availed of one of those services which offers
Cash For Structured Settlement for my credit card. Not wanting to be deep in debt for life, I strengthened my resolve to provide a safer and sounder financial future for my family.

I am also hoping to explore whether the service that offers to sell structured settlements or the cash for structured settlement payments will bring me closer to a bright, sunny and truly debt-free future. Wish me luck!

I GOTTA HAVE SHADES

Last week, we had a fundraising bazaar for the country's oldest and biggest university. A booth which piqued my curiosity was that which was offering services for customized curtains, blinds and a host of other window coverings.

I have long wanted to replace our curtain with window blinds ever since that unfortunate day in June which marked Haligilet's unfortunate run in with our curtains and curtain rod.

It would certainly make me happy if I get to buy anything even half as nice as those window coverings designed by Hunter Douglas showcased at BlindSaver.com. The site is an interesting resource of the finest quality, custom made window converings. The website provides extensive product information as well handy color and fabric swatches to better facilitate the decision-making process. There are likewise customer service and design departments who are readily available through phone and email, aside from the website.

I still couldn't decide which fabric swatch to choose. Wish me luck!

TO BE OR NOT TO BE, WRINKLE-FREE

My in-laws just left after spending the entire weekend in our home. Since I was more of liability than an asset as shopping companion, my mother-in-law deemed it best to spare me the agony of limping around the mall (I was also temporarily off toddler watch to--greatness! Hehehe!)

Instead, mil decided to check out if Murad Resurgence is being offered at Heaven on the 5th in Rustan's. Totally not a bad deal for me because I could hang out at one of my favorite cafes--UCC. Wuhoo!!!

What triggered mil's decision to have her facial in Manila was her LA-based best friend's (our Ninang V) raves on Resurgence, a clinically proven anti-aging remedthat helps restore lost moisture, accelerate healthy cell turnover, increase firmness and elasticity, and even help reduce hormonal breakouts. Looks like my mil was totally convinced after viewing the link to the Resurgence infomercial, which Ninang V emailed a few weeks ago.

The downside was, the Belo clinic was fully-booked! She just had to set an appointment to coincide with her next trip to Manila. Haaay, nakakadagdag daw ng wrinkles! Hehehe.

MODERN PLANNING FOR MODERN LIVING

And so our shooting starts next week. As lead for this project, I am faced with the daunting task of doing anything and everything to make the entire production process as smooth sailing as possible. From the sourcing of talents, venues, even permits, I have been like a top, spinning in circles, with all the things to coordinate and flesh out.

Almost everything has been ticked off my task list, save for looking for a house set-up--one that had one of those ideal living rooms and
